Thanks to the nice weather, 500 species of Chinese roses in the 6,000-square-meter Chinese Rose Island and 4,000-square-meter walkway, beside the exhibition greenhouse in Chenshan Botanical Garden, entered their best viewing season, attracting loads of visitors. Since last year, Chenshan Botanical Garden has newly planted 50 roses in the Chinese Rose Island, as well as more than 1,000 roses on both sides of the walkway between the Rose Bridge and Grass Garden.
In addition, a 4,000-square-meter rose area has been planted outside Hall A and C of the exhibition greenhouse.
Currently, the main rose species are made up of nine groups including Fenghua Chinese rose, hybrid fragrant Chinese rose, mini Chinese rose, vine Chinese rose, tree-shaped Chinese rose, shrub Chinese rose, big Chinese rose, shrub rose and tree-shaped rose. All of them have entered their flowering period, which is expected to last till June.
The Chinese rose originated in China, and was imported to Europe in the 18th century. The species is also important in the breeding of many modern garden roses, including Hybrid Tea roses.
To help visitors to distinguish between Chinese and other roses, Chenshan Botanical Garden deliberately planted ordinary roses together with Chinese roses in the Chinese Rose Island so visitors can easily see the differences directly. Generally speaking, roses’ leaves are wrinkled while Chinese roses’ leaves are flat; roses have fine thorns but Chinese roses’ thorns are relatively small; most roses are white or pink but Chinese roses have a variety of colors.
