Students from Shanghai elementary and middle schools tested their knowledge of natural science in a Global Nature History Day (GNHD) competition at Shanghai Chenshan Botanic Garden on May 9.
GNHD is an international education program designed to inspire elementary and middle school students' interest in natural science and history. This year’s competition is themed Nature's Great Events: Earth, Life and Their Interconnectedness.
A total of 117 teams presented their research projects and performed on stage, from which 40 teams were chosen for the second round in the botanic garden on May 23. Winners will have a chance to join the global competition.
Students presented projects related to the origin of the Earth, to the origin of life, how are nature's great events interconnect and influence one another.
The GNHD competition inspired students by encouraging them to learn natural science knowledge through research, and improve their abilities of analysis, teamwork, and expressing themselves.
Launched in 2012 by the Global Health and Education, a nonprofit organization located in California, the competition mainly covers China and the US, aiming to teach natural history and science outside the classroom and to connect students with their peers around the world.
"Through the competitions, we hope that students will not only explore the natural world, but also develop creative problem-solving abilities, cultivate leadership skills, and improve cross-cultural understanding," said Kenneth E. Behring, chairman of the Global Health and Education.
