As the Water Rat says in Wind in the Willows, there is nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. And low-lying Songjiang district with its many lakes, rivers and streams is the perfect place to while away an afternoon on the water.

Whether you feel like sailing down one of the rivers, rowing out on a lake or enjoying a romantic waterfront dinner, this area to the southwest of downtown Shanghai has everything you need.

1. Fangta or Square Pagoda Park

Highlights: Boating on a lake with fabulous views of the park’s nine-story, 48-meter-high pagoda, a landmark of the district, is a real joy.

A visit to the park also offers the opportunity to explore its historic scenic area that was built during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126) and the many Buddhist relics left behind in the ruins, or enjoy the tranquil night views, when the pagoda and antiquated buildings are illuminated.

During April and May, the 2017 Shanghai Rhododendron Show will be staged in the park, where all sorts of colorful rhododendrons will be on display.

Address: No 235 Zhongshan Rd, Songjiang district.
