The flesh of this fish is tender and fresh and has no unpleasant smell. Weevers' average weight is 100 grams. Their body is spindle-shaped and their head big and flat. They have a wide mouth and small scales. At first sight, they seem to have four gills, but after a close look you will notice that they just have two gills.

They reproduce in the sea but grow up in fresh water. Due to water pollution, the output of the fish has declined so sharply that they nearly died out after 1970. In the early years of the 21st century, researchers in Shanghai started to conduct experiments on artificial breeding and reproduction of weevers in waters in Sheshan.
