Visitors to Sheshan National Tourism Resort can now try dishes made with bamboo shoots fresh from Sheshan Mountain.

The bamboo shoots grown on the mountain are both tender and crisp, and have tantalized the taste buds of many visitors, including Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).

Due to their special scent similar to that of an orchid, they are also known as "orchid bamboo shoots".

The story goes that in ancient times, bamboo was planted on Sheshan Mountain to shield orchid blossoms from the wind and ended being imbued with the special scent.

There are over 100 ways to cook bamboo shoots in Shanghai. They can be fried, braised, steamed or baked into pastries.

Shanghai Sheshan Forest Hotel is a great place for visitors to taste the seasonal delicacy.

The special treat will be offered in the hotel until the end of this month. Visitors must make reservations at least three days in advance.

In addition to enjoying the bamboo shoots, visitors can also tour Sheshan Mountain, which is home to numerous attractions such as the Sheshan Catholic Church, Xiudaozhe Tower and Sheshan Observatory.

The scenic area is open from 8:30 to 16:30. Visitors must make reservations ahead of time.
