Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden in Sheshan National Tourism Resort received the 2020 National Award of Botanical Garden Excellence in Memory of Prof Chen Fenghuai at the recent Annual Academic Conference of China Botanical Garden held in Shenyang, Liaoning province.
The award was set up to commemorate Chen Fenghuai, founder of modern botanical gardens in China.
Chenshan Botanical Garden won the award for its outstanding performance in biodiversity protection, sustainable operation, scientific research, flora conservation and breeding, and gardening.
As a conservation and breeding center for endangered wild resource plants in East China, the garden has achieved important results in recent years.
The botanical garden has determined specific species, potential economic value and endangered plants in China based on lists of resource plant species and field surveys. It has also established a big data base by integrating existing documents, specimens and its collection of living plants to make a preliminary assessment on current distribution status of endangered resource plants in China.
The annual acedemic conference was attended by more than 200 representatives from botanical gardens in China, including six from Chenshan Botanical Garden.
The garden, covering an area of 207 hectares, is currently home to approximately 10,000 plant species, including some rare and endangered species. The plants are labeled with their names and characteristics, making it easy for children to learn about them.
