The Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden in the Shanghai Sheshan National Tourist Resort recently opened its first flower show of the new year, which will run until Jan 15.

The show features a festive design in celebration of the new year and is currently being held at a tropical flower house in a display greenhouse located in the botanical garden.

The display area is adorned with decorative garland used in Western countries to celebrate the new year, traditional Chinese ceramic flower pots, and the nationally protected lotus-leaved maidenhair fern. There are also hanging flower balls, ground plants, and potted plants.

The highlight of the show is its poinsettias styled in four colors, which is a rare sight since only the big red poinsettia can be used as a styling plant for cultivation.

To prepare for the show, gardeners carefully selected and bred the poinsettias and spent years pruning, plucking buds, and pulling and trimming. A two-meter poinsettia plant, for example, needs to be maintained for three to four years.

In addition, African hibiscus plants native to East Africa and Madagascar exhibited at the show have been formed by gardeners into a single stem and wine bottle shape. It is widely planted in many regions of the world and is popular for its beautiful and bright hanging flower balls.
