The Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden Rose Garden received the WFRS Award of Garden Excellence at the 2022 World Rose Convention held in Adelaide, Australia, on Nov 2, making it the fifth rose garden in China to win this honor.
The World Rose Convention is the largest event of the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS), which has about 40 member countries. The WFRS Award of Garden Excellence recognizes the highest levels of achievement in the field of rose garden development, maintenance and display.
The rose garden in Shanghai opened to the public in 2010, covering an area of about 36,000 square meters. It is one of the richest collections of roses in East China and displays 1,025 rose species or varieties such as modern Chinese roses, ancient Chinese roses and wild original species.
It integrates ornamental recreation, popular science education and scientific research, and is committed to collecting and preserving rose germplasm resources, cultivating and promoting excellent varieties, and promoting rose culture.
May is the best viewing period for the roses. The annual number of visitors to the Chenshan Botanical Garden is about 1.2 million, 300,000 of whom go to the rose garden.
Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden Rose Garden includes two main parts: Rose Island and Sky Rose Garden.
The Sky Rose Garden, located outside the greenhouse in Chenshan Botanical Garden, is the main place for the conservation of rose variety resources, and plays an important role for rose landscape display, ex-situ conservation, scientific research, development and utilization, landscape display, popular science education, exchange and cooperation. It consists of display areas for wild resources, ancient Chinese roses, modern Chinese roses, and is a popular place for visitors to take photos.
Chenshan Botanical Garden holds a rose exhibition every two years to show its achievements in the cultivation, breeding and research of Chinese roses, promote rose culture, and carry out a variety of rose theme activities online and offline such as quiz, parent-child flower arrangement, rose painting and photography collection and display.
In addition, academic conferences such as rose seminars and applied technology exchange meetings have been organized to promote cooperation and exchanges at home and abroad, and give full play to the advantages of the Chenshan Botanical Garden in the research of rose varieties and further promote the development and innovation of rose industrialization.
The selection of the WFRS Award of Garden Excellence began in 1995 and is selected every three years. Candidates must be nominated by their national rose associations, and invite more than two members of the WFRS to visit, score and nominate in order to be eligible to participate.
The nominated rose gardens need to submit pictures, promotional videos and other application materials to the award committee. The award committee will vote at the World Rose Convention. The rose garden with the most votes can receive the WFRS Award of Garden Excellence.
